Joyce Wood
Scenes of New England
ABOUT

Joyce Wood is a Wakefield, Massachusetts–based watercolor artist. Her work offers a collectible interpretation of the New England landscape in an impressionistic style. Rooted in direct observation and a deep familiarity with the region, each painting begins with time spent studying the landscape and architecture, camera in hand, gathering reference material to bring back to the studio.
Most importantly, her work focuses on feeling—the atmosphere, light, and distinct sense of place. She is often drawn to the countryside, marshes, and shoreline, especially on gray, cloudy days throughout New England’s four seasons. Man-made structures, whether a wooden boat or a traditional clapboard hous, frequently anchor her compositions.
She has recently expanded her subject matter to include wildlife, from coyotes to egrets and eagles, adding another layer of interest to her work. Photography has become an integral part of her creative process.
Wood’s work is highly recognizable yet fleeting, reflecting the ever-changing nature of New England weather—no two days are alike.
After a 30-year career in nursing, during which she continually made time to study and develop her craft, she is now a full-time painter and photographer. Her work attracts collectors drawn to her distinctive interpretation of traditional New England subject matter. Her studio is located in her home in Wakefield, overlooking Crystal Lake.
